Focus models are equipped with the new generation Zetec-E engine ("New Generation Zetec-E engine"). These are the 1.8L and 2.0L engines that are also used in the Mondeo. The most important changes from previous Zetec-E engine options are as follows:
- Hydraulic engine mounts (the previously used cast iron engine mount bracket is no longer needed);
- Improved economy, dynamic performance and exhaust emissions;
- Modified valve mechanism with mechanical pushers;
- Modified timing belt guide with new belt tensioner;
- Aluminum timing belt cover that also doubles as an engine mount for improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH);
- Aluminum crankcase reinforcement block and flat oil sump improving NVH performance;
- Connecting rods and pistons of a modified design;
- Full flow oil filter bolted to the cylinder block;
- Coolant pump moved outward towards the cylinder block;
- Modified exhaust system;
- Generator with generator load feedback function.
The differences compared to the engines used in the Mondeo are as follows:
- Modified oil sump;
- Modified intake oil line;
- Tri-purpose ("trimetallic") catalytic converter with feedback to the engine;
- Modified intake manifold;
- Modified exhaust manifold;
- No EGR system is required to meet the current emissions standard.
- Modified throttle body;
- Using the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor (CNT sensor) instead of engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor);
- Modified thermostat housing due to the absence of an ECT sensor and a coolant temperature indicator sensor;
