The Focus range is powered by the new generation Zetec-E engine. These are the same 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre engines that are also used in the Mondeo. The most important changes compared to previous Zetec-E variants are:
- Hydraulic engine mounts (the previously used cast iron engine mount bracket is no longer needed);
- Improved fuel economy, dynamic performance and exhaust emissions;
- Modified valve train with mechanical tappets;
- Modified timing belt guide with new belt tensioner;
- Aluminum timing belt cover that also functions as an engine mount for improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance;
- Aluminum crankcase reinforcement block and flat oil pan for improved NVH performance;
- Modified connecting rods and pistons;
- Full flow oil filter with bolt-on cylinder block mounting;
- Coolant pump moved outward towards the cylinder block;
- Modified exhaust system;
- Generator with generator load feedback function.
The differences compared to the engines used in the Mondeo are as follows:
- Modified oil pan;
- Modified oil intake manifold;
- Tri-purpose ("tri-metallic") catalytic converter with feedback to the engine;
- Modified intake manifold;
- Modified exhaust manifold;
- No EGR system is required to meet current emission standards.
- Modified throttle body;
- Using the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor (CHT Sensor) instead of the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT Sensor);
- Modified thermostat housing due to the absence of the ECT sensor and coolant temperature gauge sensor;
