- I - hydraulic power transmission (hydrodynamic torque converter with clutch for locking the torque converter);
- II - mechanical planetary gear sets with four forward gears plus overdrive (upshift) function and reverse gear;
- III - automatic switching with electronic control.
The shift points between the planetary gear sets are controlled by a separate control module (ESSC) in the EEC-V Focus engine control unit. You can activate six shift positions (PRND-2-I) using the central selector lever and an overdrive function via the side button. The ESSC module cooperates with the engine management and calculates the most appropriate shift strategy for each situation based on data from 18 different information sources in the engine and gearbox.
In selector lever position D, the overdrive button on the side can be used to exert additional influence on the automatic shift rhythm: it blocks fourth gear or prevents shifting back to third gear. Failure of the electronic components is compensated for by the hydraulic emergency mode program in a limited range of driving programs.
Gearbox controls: 1 - EEC V RCM; 2 - diagnostic connector; 3 - throttle position sensor (TP); 4 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor with Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor; 5 - crankshaft position sensor (CSP); 6 - Turbine Shaft Position Sensor (TSS); 7 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS); 8 - brake light switch; 9 - Gearbox oil temperature sensor (TFT); 10 - Motion step sensor (TR); 11 - Overdrive switch (OD); 12 - control module with electromagnetic valves; 13 - electromagnetic lock of the selector lever; 14 - start blocking relay; 15 - electromagnetic ignition key removal lock; 16 - AC relay; 17 - transmission warning light; 18 - O/D light (combination instrument).
