Fuel — general information and savings

            0

All Ford Focus gasoline engines require Euro Super gasoline (ROZ 95). But they can also be filled with Super Plus petrol (ROZ 98). It makes sense to fill Super Plus when your Focus with a trailer is constantly required to deliver maximum power at high outside temperatures. Fuel consumption with Super Plus can even decrease slightly. But even more of an impact on fuel consumption is your own foot on the gas pedal.

A light gas pedal will reduce gas mileage

Accelerate smoothly, shift to a higher gear as soon as possible.

When the desired speed is reached, try to let the car move in the highest possible gear with little throttle. Raise the engine speed only when overtaking or changing lanes in the traffic on the road. In addition, you must always turn off the engine at short stops, for example in front of a railway barrier, before traffic lights at construction sites or in traffic jams: already after 5-7 seconds this becomes beneficial, including for the environment.

Fuel handling

When handling fuel, the rule of thumb is the utmost care. Therefore, do not take maintenance and repair work on fuel system components lightly. You must be especially careful when draining fuel from the fuel tank. Observe the following safety precautions:

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and securely insulate the battery poles.

Drain fuel from the fuel tank only in the fresh air. You need a fuel-resistant hand pump for this (e.g. pump with bellows hose). Never attempt to drain fuel through the top opening of the fuel tank (fuel gauge flange) or suck with a hose through the mouth - there is a risk of poisoning by extremely poisonous additives in the fuel!

Always have a carbon dioxide powder or foam class B fire extinguisher in the immediate vicinity.

Never drain fuel over an inspection pit: the gases evaporating from it are heavier than air and after a few hours form a highly explosive mixture in the pit. Consequence: immediate explosion hazard and health hazards from inhalation.

Make sure that there are no electrical appliances, open flames, heat sources or sparks in the room while working with fuel.

Fuel may only be poured into sealed, legibly labeled containers. For this purpose, special containers with ignition protection and locks for pressure equalization are available.

Residual gases accumulate in an empty fuel tank. Therefore, increased caution is required - risk of explosion.

Fuel - concepts and standards

Regular Gasoline/Super Gasoline: almost identical in purity, evaporation characteristics (important for flammability) and energy balance (heat of combustion for each kg of fuel). Decisive difference: Super grade gasoline has better knock resistance than regular gasoline (with a research octane rating of at least 91).

Diesel fuel: a fuel that makes excellent use of the physical properties of a diesel engine. Due to the high flammability of this fuel and the extremely high compression ratio in diesel engines, combustion is controlled within a fraction of a second. For gasoline engines, diesel fuel would be a pure poison - spark plugs would lose their ability to spark in the shortest possible time.

Summer/winter diesel fuel: summer diesel fuel in accordance with DIN 51 601 is supplied to petrol stations from spring to autumn without a flow improver. Already at minimal negative temperatures, summer diesel fuel would begin to wax and clog fuel lines and filters. Therefore, in our country, even during the transition period, fuel with a small proportion of additives to improve fluidity enters the market. It retains its ability to pass through the filter down to about -10°C. According to DIN standard. winter fuel retains its fluidity down to -12°C; in practice, winter diesel fuel can withstand negative temperatures down to about -22°C.

Detonation resistance: the higher the compression ratio, the higher the thermal efficiency of the engine. But if the fuel in gasoline engines is prone to self-ignition, then uncontrolled combustion occurs - the engine «ringing». Supergasoline withstands higher combustion pressures than regular gasoline and is therefore less prone to self-ignition. If you accidentally fill up your Focus with regular gasoline, your miss will be paid for with a loud chime when accelerating from low revs to full speed. Therefore, in order to avoid serious damage, the Zetec-SE engines in the Focus are equipped with knock sensors. As soon as the sensors register an unusual vibration of the engine block, they gradually adapt the ignition timing to the lower quality fuel. In this case, treat the gas pedal more sensitively and require only medium speed from the engine. Upgrade your fuel as quickly as possible by adding a few liters of super-plus gasoline.

Octane number: denotes the knock resistance of the fuel. At the gas station, as a rule, they meet the designation ROZ (research octane number), less commonly MOZ specification (engine octane). Octane ratings for minimum requirements for unleaded petrol were previously fixed in Germany by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) in DIN 51 607. Today the European standard EN 228 applies.
