Pump control unit (PCU) on the top side of the pump functions as a central link - it has no mechanical connection to the gas pedal. Bosch VP-30 controls a high pressure solenoid valve that loads an axial piston. The valve opens and closes with varying timing exactly according to the PCU's set universal characteristic (however, the 75 hp diesel engine model. the Focus operates with modified universal characteristics, which are nevertheless not identical to those in the Fiesta's 75 hp diesel engine. - without charge air cooler).



High pressure solenoid valve: 1 - pressure spring; 2 - axial piston; 3 - feed; 4 - coil; 5 - direction of closing and opening; 6 - valve needle; 7 - branch to the nozzle.


Adjustment of the start of fuel supply in the Focus is carried out without a needle movement sensor. The signal comes from the pump control unit and then to the hydraulic system through the high pressure solenoid valve. The start of fuel supply is always determined by the closing moment of the solenoid valve, the end of fuel supply is determined by the opening moment, and the amount of fuel supplied is calculated based on the time period during which the high pressure solenoid valve is closed.

Unlike previous models, the VP-30 dispenses with a mechanical control damper, and as a result of this, and based on the fine adjustment of the high-pressure solenoid valve, the pump operates with a markedly increased hydraulic efficiency.
