Significantly increased hydraulic efficiency — VP 30 injection pump (Focus Turnier 1)

The pump control unit (PCU) on the top of the pump functions as a central link - it has no mechanical connection to the accelerator pedal. The Bosch VP-30 controls a high-pressure solenoid valve, which loads an axial piston. The valve opens and closes at a variable stroke ratio exactly according to the set universal characteristic of the PCU (however, the 75 PS diesel engine in the Focus runs with a modified universal characteristic, which is, however, not identical to the characteristic in the 75 PS diesel engine of the Fiesta - without a charge air cooler).

High pressure solenoid valve: 1 - pressure spring; 2 - axial piston; 3 - feed; 4 - coil; 5 - direction of closing and opening; 6 - valve needle; 7 - branch to the injector.

The Focus adjusts the start of fuel delivery without a needle movement sensor. The signal comes from the pump control unit and then to the hydraulic system via a high-pressure electromagnetic valve. The start of fuel delivery is always determined by the moment the electromagnetic valve closes, the end of fuel delivery is determined by the moment of opening, and the amount of fuel delivered is calculated based on the period of time during which the high-pressure electromagnetic valve is closed.

Unlike previous models, the VP-30 does without a mechanical control valve, due to which and based on the precise adjustment of the high-pressure electromagnetic valve, the pump operates with significantly increased hydraulic efficiency.
