In order for each cylinder to receive its particular portion of fuel in the right sequence and at the right time, the encoder wheel and angle sensor function to a certain extent as a distributor. The pulse encoder wheel is connected directly to the pump drive shaft, the rotation angle encoder is rigidly connected to the roller ring. As soon as the solenoid valve begins to control the injection regulator, the roller ring turns and with it the rotation angle sensor in the direction «advance» or «lag». The encoder wheel has gaps in the teeth for each cylinder. The angle sensor constantly probes the gear wheel and sends the received information to the PCU.

Its signals are the basis for the angular position of the crankshaft at the moment, the current speed of the injection pump and the adjustment of the start of injection.
