Brake fluid — general information

            0

The main components of brake fluid are polyglycol ether and polyglycol. This mixture is still liquid at -40°C and has a very high boiling point of about 270°C. It is already clear from the composition that the brake fluid is hygroscopic - it constantly absorbs water from the air through the expansion tank cap. It is about 2% annually. At a water content of about 2.5%, the boiling point drops to about 150°C. In this case, with very hot brakes (driving in the mountains, full braking, driving with a trailer) vapor bubbles can form in the brake fluid, which have the same effect in the brake system as air - the brake pedal falls to the floor when braking. So for your own safety, change your brake fluid every two years. If you regularly check your car in the workshop, this is done automatically.

Old brake fluid is disposed of as special waste

Brake fluid is poisonous. Do not touch it with your mouth or open wounds. It does not corrode metal and rubber parts, but is aggressive towards car varnish. Dispose of the brake fluid drained from the system in any case. Do not use brake fluid from a container that has been open for a long time. Used brake fluid is classified as special waste - dispose of it accordingly.
