Disassembly
1. Disconnect the ball joint ends from the steering rods after loosening the lock nuts.
2. Remove the clamps securing the casings and move aside the protective casings of the steering gear housing.
3. Move the rack to the left until it stops and clamp it in a vice with soft jaws.
4. Using the appropriate wrench, unscrew the steering rods from the toothed rack.
5. Remove the pushrod cover from the steering gear cover, remove the gasket, adjusting shims, spring and pushrod.
6. Remove the steering gear drive pinion cover together with its gasket.
7. Remove the bearing from the steering gear drive shaft.
8. Remove the toothed rack from the transmission housing.
9. Remove the nylon guide ring from the right side of the steering gear housing.
Assembly
1. Clean and check the technical condition of all parts; replace worn or damaged parts.
2. Insert the nylon guide ring into the housing from the right side of the steering gear housing.
3. Attach the toothed rack to the steering gear housing and set the rack in the middle position.
4. Install the drive pinion into the steering gear housing together with the bearing.
5. Insert the gasket and the drive gear housing cover.
6. Install the push rod into the steering gear housing.
7. Install the dial indicator together with the bracket (15.046 and 13.008).
8. Set the sensor arrow to zero on the marking plate.
9. Install the sensor on the pushrod and rest its measuring tip against the steering gear housing.
10. Record the reading (A) while moving the rack from one extreme position to the other.
11. The thickness (E) of the shims to be installed under the tappet cover is determined in millimetres based on the expression:
E = A j + F
where:
A – indication of the indicator type sensor;
j = 0.14 mm – gasket thickness;
F = 0.015... 0.150 mm – design gap.
12. Install the pusher spring, adjusting shims of the calculated thickness, gasket, cover and tighten the cover mounting bolts.
13. Using a dynamometer, check the moment of resistance when turning the steering gear drive pinion (see subsection 7.1).
14. Move the toothed rack in the housing to the left until it stops and clamp it in a vice with soft jaws.
15. Connect the steering rods to the toothed rack and put on the protective covers of the transmission housing.
16. Install new housing mounting clamps.
17. Connect the ends with ball joints to the steering rods and secure them from unscrewing.
