Fuel pump — removal and installation

Mechanical fuel pump

Mechanical fuel pump

1 - pusher, 2 - gasket, 3 - fuel pump, 4 - strainer, 5 - gasket, 6 - pump cover, 7 - fuel line, 8 - damper

On non-air-conditioned carbureted engines, the mechanical fuel pump is mounted on the left side of the engine.

Removal and installation

1. To test the pump, disconnect the wires of the primary winding of the ignition coil.

2. Remove the pressure hose from the pump.

3. Turn the engine over with the starter. In this case, a jet of fuel should flow from the pump. Otherwise, the pump is defective and must be removed.

4. Remove ground wire from battery.

5. Remove the supply and pressure hoses from the pump.

6. Unscrew the two bolts and remove the pump (indicated by an arrow) from the cylinder block.

7. Remove pusher if necessary (indicated by an arrow).

8. Loosen the screw and remove the cover (1) and mesh nylon filter (2).

9. Rinse the cap, filter and pump in gasoline.

10. Installation is made in sequence, return to removal. At the same time, install the cover on the pump so that the marks (indicated by arrows) aligned, and tighten the screw.

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and is fixed together with the fuel level sensor. Special equipment is required to test the pump.

Removal and installation

1. Remove fuel tank.

2. Unscrew the fuel pump/fuel gauge assembly (1 - fuel pump, 2 - fuel level sensor) from the fuel tank using a special Ford tool (Ns 23-014) or two Phillips screwdrivers. Remove gasket.

3. Installation is made in sequence, return to removal.

The pressure union of the fuel pump

1 - pressure fitting, 2 - fuel supply hose, 3 - pressure fuel hose

All fuel injected engines with air-conditioned carburetors use an electric fuel pump. The pump is installed under cars right behind the gas tank. If the fuel pump fails, check the appropriate fuses and relays first.

To check the engine pump with a carburetor, disconnect the fuel supply hose from the pressure regulator and lower it into a measuring vessel. Switch on the ignition for 30 seconds and measure the amount of fuel injected during this time, which should be at least 400 cm3.

To test the pump of an engine with a fuel injection system, special equipment is required.

Removal and installation

1. Remove ground wire from battery.

2. Raise the front of the car.

3. Clamp the hose from the fuel tank to the pump with a clamp.

4. Place a suitable container under the pump, depressurize the fuel system and disconnect the supply and pressure hoses from the pump.

5. Remove the electrical connector from the pump.

6. Loosen the pump clamp bolt and remove the pump.
