Fuel pump (Escort 3)

The fuel pump by AC Deico is of the diaphragm type, driven by the camshaft eccentric through the pusher (lever for GLA engines). The pump body is non-separable, only its cover is removed for cleaning or replacing the filter or cover gasket. Fuel supply pressure is 0.22-0.25 kgf/cm² for the GLA engine, 0.22-0.35 kgf/cm² for engines of other models installed on the Ford Escort. 0.24-0.38 kgf/cm² for engines installed on the Ford Orion.

Checking the fuel supply pressure

The fuel supply pressure is not adjustable and should not exceed the upper limit specified for each engine model. Start the engine and let it idle for a short time to fill the carburetor float chamber. Stop the engine. Disconnect the fuel supply hose from the carburetor, preventing gasoline from getting on the hot engine. Connect a test pressure gauge to the fuel hose, start the engine and measure the fuel supply pressure at idle and with a short-term increase in speed. Stop the engine, disconnect the pressure gauge and connect the fuel supply hose to the carburetor. If the fuel pump is faulty, it must be replaced.

Removal and installation

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Remove the hoses from the fuel pump. Unscrew the two mounting nuts and remove the fuel pump. Unscrew the screw securing the cover 7 (Fig. 2.74) of the pump and remove it; clean the internal cavity and mesh filter 5.



Install a new or good condition cover gasket, filter and cover, making sure that the cover fits into the annular groove in the pump body. Clean the mating surfaces of the pump and cylinder block. Install a new gasket and tighten the fuel pump mounting nuts. Connect the fuel supply and pressure hoses and tighten them with screw clamps. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
