Location of the drive belt on car models with power steering and air conditioning

1 - power steering pump, 2 - generator, 3 - belt tensioner, 4 - water pump, 5 - air conditioning compressor, 6 - crankshaft drive pulley, 7 - drive belt

The water pump drive belt also drives the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor. The belt is tensioned by an automatic tensioner.

The degree of belt wear can be determined by the position of the mark (A) on the mounting bracket in relation to the block (IN) on the tension lever (see fig. Drive Belt Status Indicator Labels). If the belt is new, the mark is flush with the top of the tensioner block. When the belt is stretched, the belt tensioner lever moves and the block on the lever moves up relative to the mark on the bracket. When the mark passes to the lower part of the tensioner block, the belt must be replaced.

Removal and installation

1. To remove the belt, turn the tensioner lever clockwise with a socket wrench (17 mm) behind the lug in the center of the pulley, remove the belt from the pulleys and slowly release the tensioner.

2. When installing the belt, retract the tensioner in the same way as when removing it, and after installing the belt on the pulleys, slowly release the tensioner. This will automatically tension the belt.
