When the fluid level is low and the brake pads are worn, the control lamps on the instrument panel light up. The graphic display module located in the instrument panel provides a schematic view of the car and information about faulty lamps and loose doors. A warning about possible ice is given by the lighting up of two snowflake symbols on the graphic display module. The yellow snowflake lights up at an outside temperature of plus 4°C and the red one at 0°C. Information about the outside temperature can, if desired, also be displayed on the digital clock display in the upper console.
When the ignition is turned on, all AWS warning lights and symbols in the graphic display module should come on for a few seconds and then go out (brake light symbols will not go out until the brakes are applied for the first time). If lights remain on, the level or system in question should be checked immediately. If any light or symbol flashes, the level or system in question should be checked.
The main components of the system, in addition to the signal lights and the graphic display module, are various sensors and control assemblies. The liquid level sensors are reed switches controlled by magnets installed in the floats. The brake pad wear alarm is activated after a wire coil pressed into the pad lining at a certain depth breaks against the disk. All sensors, including the door-opening switch sensors, have contacts shunted by resistors so that the control unit can distinguish the difference between closed and open sensor contacts and broken or short-circuited circuits.
The lamps are monitored by a lamp fault module located under the instrument cluster. The lamps for the side lights, rear lights and low beam headlights are monitored. The lamps are monitored in pairs, so that installing a lamp of the wrong power even on one side of the car will trigger a warning signal.
The temperature sensors are installed under the front bumper. They are thermistors whose resistance changes with changes in the ambient temperature.
The AWS control assembly integrates input signals from various sensors and controls the illumination of warning lights and symbols. The low fluid warning lights are activated with a certain delay to avoid false alarms caused by vehicle vibrations during driving. If a malfunction occurs in the AWS system, a thorough inspection and detection of the defect should be carried out by a competent specialist.
