Removal and installation of the brake cylinder of drum brakes

The wheel brake cylinder can be removed without removing the brake pads.

Remove the wheel brake cylinder in the following order:

- put the car on a jack and unscrew the brake pipe from the reverse side of the wheel brake cylinder at the wheel being removed, on a car with a combi body, disconnect the brake pipe from the brake hose from the lower side of the rear spring, close the open ends from dirt;

- sequentially rock the brake pads so that the piston releases the brake pads from the brake cylinder;

- unscrew the cylinder from the reverse side of the brake shield plate and remove it (pic. 262), remove the sealing ring; if the cylinder is worn, replace it.

Install as follows:

- insert the sealing ring from the reverse side of the cylinder and fix the cylinder on the brake shield plate;

- insert the brake pads into the cylinder piston, at the same time, first carefully insert one pad into the cylinder guide, insert the second pad from the outside so that it enters the piston slot;

- check up correct landing of all details and establish a brake drum;

- bleed the brakes and press the brake pedal several times to adjust the pads;

- actuate the parking brake lever several times to activate the self-adjusting mechanism;

- lower the vehicle onto the wheels and tighten the wheel nuts to 85 Nm.
