Withdrawal

1. Loosen the wheel nuts, raise the rear of the car, place it securely on stands. Block the front wheels, then remove the rear wheels.

1989 and earlier models

2. Remove the grease cap, cotter pin, locknut and nut (see picture).

3. Grasp the brake drum and pull it out just enough to free the outer bearing and washer (see picture). If the drum is stuck, loosen the brake adjusting sprocket as instructed in section 6, paragraphs 7 to 9.

4. Remove the outer wheel bearing and pull the drum hub off the axle.

1990 release and later models

5. Unscrew - if present - the push nuts from the stud and remove the drum from the studs. If the drum is jammed, see section 6, paragraphs 7 to 9. If it still does not come off, then remove it together with the hub and wheel bearing assembly, as described in chapter 10, section 22.

Examination

6. Check the drum for groove cracks, deep grooves and signs of overheating at the pad contact points. If the drums have blue spots indicating areas of overheating, they should be replaced. It is also necessary to inspect the presence of traces of grease on the contact surfaces of the pads; they can be removed with denatured alcohol or a special cleaner, but contaminated pads must be changed. Brilliant. the polished surface can be corrected with a medium-grained sandpaper.

Note: it is recommended to treat the surfaces of drums for any type of work with the brake system. This treatment will eliminate the possibility of end runout. If, as a result of wear or machining, the maximum allowable diameter is exceeded (cast on a drum) (see picture), drums should be replaced.
