Wheel cylinder — removal, reassembly and installation

Caution: brake dust contains asbestos, which is extremely harmful to health. Do not blow with compressed air or inhale.


Warning: Clean the outside of the parts with special cleaner or denatured alcohol. Never use gasoline, kerosene or gasoline-based cleaners for this purpose.


Note: never repair only one cylinder - always two at the same time.

Withdrawal


1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, place it on stands Block the front wheels.

2. Remove rear hub/drum (section 5) and brake pads (section 6).

3. Clean the cylinder.

4. Disconnect the brake pipeline (see picture). Do not divert the pipeline away from the wheel cylinder.



5. Unscrew fixing bolts of the wheel cylinder.

6. Disconnect the wheel cylinder from the brake shield, put on a clean workbench. Insert a plug into the pipeline immediately to prevent loss and contamination of the brake fluid.

Overhaul


7. Remove the bleeder valve, anthers, pistons, cuffs and spring assembly (see picture).

6. Return spring assembly with caps.



8. Clean the wheel cylinder with brake fluid, denatured alcohol or brake cleaner.

Warning: Never, under any circumstances, use gasoline-based thinner to clean brake parts.


9. Remove excess brake fluid from the wheel cylinder. and also clean the channels - you can use compressed air.

10. Check the cylinder bore - there may be corrosion and scratches. Minor corrosion and discoloration can be removed with an iron oxide cloth; but if the hole is scratched or defects are difficult to remove, then the cylinder should be replaced with a new one.

11. Lubricate the cuffs with brake fluid.

12. Assemble the elements of the brake cylinder. Make sure that the rims of the anther are seated tightly.

Installation


13. Replace the wheel cylinder, tighten the bolts.

14. Connect pipelines and install brake pads. brake drum. Adjust the wheel bearing as instructed in section 5 (1989 and earlier models only).

15. Bleed the brakes (section 11).
