Note: On models produced since 1997, the speedometer drive cable is missing and the electronic speedometer is controlled by a signal from the vehicle speed sensor.
Removal
1. Remove the windshield wiper arms (paragraph 15).
2. With the hood closed, release the top edge of the grille panel just in front of the windshield by removing the plugs and unscrewing the top mounting screws.
3. Open the hood and secure it with the stand.
4. Remove the sealing strip from the cross panel located at the rear of the engine compartment.
5. Remove the lower screws and remove the halves of the grille panel located in front of the windshield, removing first one side and then the other.
6. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
7. Working behind the bulkhead, squeeze the grommet at the top end of the speedometer cable where it connects to the intermediate cable and remove the grommet from the rear of the speedometer head. Disconnect the cable and remove it from the inner bulkhead panel along with the rubber grommet (see Fig. 12.7,a,b).

8. Apply the parking brake, raise the front end and place it on supports.
9. Loosen the nut and disconnect the speedometer cable from the vehicle speed sensor located on the transmission. Then remove the cable from the engine compartment. While loosening the nut with one wrench, hold the sensor with the other (see Fig. 12.9, a, b).
