Removing and installing the gear shift drive (Escort 3)

Engage IV gear if it was not engaged earlier. Remove handle 25 or 26 (Fig. 3.38) from gear shift lever 1 and remove protective cover 24 as an assembly. Place the vehicle on stands. Disconnect the rear section of the exhaust tract. by removing the rear rubber suspension ring. Disconnect spring 5 from gear shift drive rod 2. Unscrew nut 1 (fig. 3.9) of the tension clutch and disconnect the rod from the intermediate shaft of the drive. Unscrew the stabilizer mounting bolt 12 (Fig. 3.38) to the gearbox, remove the rubber bushing 13 installed between the stabilizer and the gearbox. Unscrew the four bolts, remove the cup 14 of the gearshift lever and remove the stabilizer, moving it to the side.



Install the gearshift lever housing assembly and tighten its mounting bolts. Secure the stabilizer to the gearbox by installing the rubber bushing. Install the gearshift lever cup in place. Attach rod 2 to the drive shaft coming out of the gearbox and spring 5 to the rod. Next, adjust the gearshift drive as described earlier in the chapter "Removing and installing the gearbox". Install the exhaust end pipe in place and lower the car to the ground. Install the protective cover and gearshift lever handle.
