Removal
1. With the parking brake applied, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on stands.
2. On G and N type transmissions, disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission by loosening the retaining plate bolt and pulling the cable out. Now you can remove the drive gear with the sleeve from the gearbox housing.
3. On the MT75 gearbox, disconnect the speedometer cable from the gearbox by loosening the retaining plate bolt and pulling the cable out. Using a hook, pull out the plug on the opposite side of the cable hole in the transmission housing, or on later models, unscrew the bolt and remove the cover, then pull the pinion out of the transmission (see Figure 5.3, a-c).

4. Remember that oil may spill when disconnecting the gear from the gearbox.
5. If the gear is badly worn or damaged, it should be replaced with a new one. Also replace the bushing seal with a new one if it is installed and damaged in any way.
Installation
6. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal; when installing, remember to lubricate the gear and clean the surface around it.
7. Check the level and, if necessary, top up the gearbox oil in accordance with Chapter 1 and then lower the car to the ground.
