Examination
1. The reverse light circuit is controlled by a short-circuit piston type switch screwed into the side of the transmission. When a fault is detected in a circuit, first check that the circuit fuse has not blown.
2. To check the operation of the reverse switch, first apply the parking brake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on supports. Disconnect the switch plug. Check with a multimeter (with resistance measurement function) or the "battery-lamp" test circuit, short circuit between the switch terminals when reverse gear is engaged. If there is an open circuit but no obvious breaks or damage in the wires, replace the defective switch with a new one.
Removal
3. Apply the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on stands if this has not already been done.
4. After disconnecting the wiring of the reverse light switch, unscrew the switch from the gearbox housing (see figure 4.4).

Installation
5. Clean the threads of the switch and its socket (in the gearbox) from dirt.
6. Insert the switch and tighten it securely.
7. Connect the wiring, routing it past the exhaust system components and so as not to pinch the wires with the gearbox.
8. After checking the level, add oil to the gearbox if necessary in accordance with Chapter 1 and then lower the car to the ground.
