Removal

1. The gear can be accessed from above or below. To remove it from above, you need access from the top of the engine. To do this, you need to remove the air flow meter and air duct (chapter 4). To remove the gear from below, you need access to the top of the transmission. First, you need to lift the front end and install it on a support.

2. On early models, loosen the nut and disconnect the speedometer cable from the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission. Use one wrench to hold the sensor and the other to loosen the cable nut.

3. Disconnect the wiring from the vehicle speed sensor. Then unscrew the sensor from the top of the drive gear.

4. Use pliers to remove the drive gear lock pin installed in the transmission housing.

5. Remove the speedometer drive gear and bearing from the top of the transmission.

6. Use a small screwdriver to remove the O-ring from the bearing groove.

7. Wash the drive gear and bearing, as well as the seat in the transmission housing.

Installation

8. Installation - in the reverse order of removal. Apply a small amount of oil to the new O-ring and insert it into the transmission housing. Hammer in the locking pin.
