Differential seals
2. These seals are installed at the junction of the drive shafts with the transmission. To check for leaks, you need to lift the car and place it on supports. If oil is leaking, you will notice it leaking under the drive shaft.
3. Remove the appropriate drive shaft (Chapter 8). To remove the right drive shaft, you must also remove the intermediate shaft.
4. Using a power screwdriver or a crowbar, remove the cuff from the transmission housing. Do not damage the housing (see Fig. 5.4, a, b).
If the cuff is difficult to remove, try pressing on it at one point. This will cause part of the cuff to come out of the housing at another point. If the cuff does not give in, purchase a cuff puller.
5. Clean the seat for the cuff in the transmission housing.
6. Lubricate the new seal with clean oil, then press it into the housing by hand without distorting it.
7. Using a tube or bushing, drive the cuff into the housing.
8. Install the drive shaft (Chapter 8).
Gear Selector Axis Sleeve
9. Apply the parking brake, raise the front end and place it on supports.
10. Remove the bolt securing the shift linkage to the axle on the rear of the transmission. Pull the linkage out and remove the rubber boot.
11. Using a device or pliers, pull the cuff out of the transmission housing. To pull out the cuff, you can drill one or two holes in it and screw self-tapping screws into them. Then the cuff needs to be pulled out with pliers by these screws.
12. Clean the seat for the cuff.
13. Lubricate the new seal with clean oil, then press it into the housing by hand without distorting it.
14. Using a tube or bushing, drive the cuff into the housing.
15. Install the rubber cap over the selector shaft.
16. Install the linkage onto the axle on the rear of the transmission and tighten the bolt.
17. If necessary, adjust the lever mechanism (paragraph 2).
