EEC-V Transmission Control Unit (PCM): the Zetec-SE and Zetec-E engines in the Focus are controlled exclusively by 60-pin EEC-V transmission control units. Exception: 1.6 l Zetec-SE with automatic transmission (4F27E). In this combination, a 104-pin EEC-V-PCM unit is used, since the transmission control is also integrated here. In addition, the ignition control module (ICM) and the electronic vehicle start-up protection system (PATS) are also operated in the PCM. The on-board computer and the cruise control system provide the PCM with equally relevant data, such as the speed signal, engine speed, engine temperature and current fuel consumption.
The PCM also contains information about the wheel/axle ratio. If you need to make changes here, the "new ratio" information must be entered into the PCM via FDS 2000.
Knock sensor (KS) only in Zetec-SE engines: due to their relatively high compression ratio (11:1), both Zetec-SE engines are equipped with a knock sensor. The sensor is screwed directly onto the engine housing in the crankcase ventilation recess. It must under no circumstances come into contact with the cylinder head or the crankcase ventilation.
As soon as the knock limit is reached, the KS signals the powertrain control module (PSM) that combustion is uncontrolled. The PCM then advances the ignition timing of the corresponding cylinder by 1.5°. If this is not sufficient, the PCM advances the ignition timing until combustion is normal. After approximately two seconds of no knock, the PCM successively advances the ignition timing to the knock limit or, with standard fuel quality, to the specified ignition timing.

Cylinder head temperature sensor (CHT sensor): is located directly in the cylinder head. It makes the coolant temperature sensor (ECT) in the previous engine management system redundant. The ECT sensor is in a state of direct heat exchange with the cylinder head, since it operates independently of the coolant. Its signals affect:
- amount of fuel injected,
- idle air control (IAC),
- ignition timing,
- eVAP (Evaporative Emissions Prevention) system with carbon canister,
- radiator fan motor,
- temperature indicator in the combination instrument,
- the "Engine Management" indicator light in the combination instrument and
- various safety functions in case of engine overheating.
