Invisible assistants — new assistants for the EEC-V injection system

The tuning of the petrol engines in the Focus models works - with a few exceptions - by analogy with the engines in the Fiesta. Therefore, in what follows, we restrict ourselves to only new or changed elements of the system. New units also do without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

EEC-V transmission control unit (RSM): Zetec-SE and Zetec-E engines in the Focus are controlled exclusively by 60-pin EEC V transmission control units. Exception: 1.6L Zetec-SE with automatic transmission (4F27E). The 104-pin EEC-V-PCM works in this combination, as the gearbox control is also integrated here. In addition, the ignition control unit also works in the PCM (ICM) and electronic blocking the departure of the car (PATS). The trip computer and speed control system provide the PCM with equally relevant data such as speed signal, engine speed, engine temperature and current fuel consumption.

The PCM also contains information about the wheel/axle ratio. If you must make changes here, the PCM must be updated with FDS 2000 about «new gear ratio».

knock sensor (KS) only in Zetec-SE engines: due to its relatively high compression ratio (11:1) both Zetec-SE engines are equipped with a knock sensor. The sensor is screwed directly onto the engine housing in the crankcase ventilation recess. It must never come into contact with the cylinder head or crankcase ventilation.

As soon as the knock limit is reached, the KS signals the transmission control unit (PSM) about uncontrolled combustion. The PCM then shifts the ignition timing of the corresponding cylinder 1.5°back. If this is not enough, the PCM delays the ignition timing until combustion is normal. After approximately two seconds of no knocking, the PCM sequentially shifts the ignition timing to the knock limit or, with standard fuel quality, to the set ignition timing.

Cylinder head temperature sensor (SNT sensor): located directly in the cylinder head. It makes the coolant temperature sensor redundant (EATING) in the old engine management system. The SNT sensor is in a state of direct heat exchange with the cylinder head, as it works independently of the coolant. Its signals affect:
  • the amount of injected fuel,
  • idle adjustment (IAC),
  • moment of ignition
  • fuel vapor recovery system with carbon filter (EVAP),
  • radiator fan motor,
  • temperature indicator in the combined instrument panel,
  • signal light «Engine management» in the combined instrument and
  • various safety features in case of engine overheating.
