For a long time now, electronically controlled fuel injection systems have been setting the tone in the intake tract of modern cars. In the exhaust system, a triple-acting adjustable catalytic converter is the latest technology. Of course, all Focus engines are controlled electronically from the air filter to the final muffler: the fuel-air mixture is prepared in them by sequential fuel injection systems, assisted by triple-acting catalytic converters. The ignition spark is controlled by a distributorless ignition system in the 1-3-4-2 sequence. It is controlled, like the entire electronic engine management system, by a powerful on-board computer. The Focus uses the latest generation of the Ford EEC-V computer. The systems are largely not subject to maintenance - possible malfunctions, according to experience, can be localized only with deep professional knowledge and electronic measuring equipment: without the FDS 2000 system tester from Ford, this will be beyond the capabilities of even advanced amateurs. Therefore, if there are malfunctions in the ignition system in your Focus, it is better to trust your dealer or specialists. However, you should know in general terms about the preparation of the fuel-air mixture in your Focus. At least so that you can more accurately identify possible malfunctions. Due to this, you will save on expensive diagnostics, since the more accurately you can formulate an order for repairs, the lower the future bill will be. Further in the text, we will consider in detail, as an example, the system of preparation of the fuel-air mixture in all petrol engines of the Focus Ford Zetec-SE.
