Checking the level and adding coolant

            0

Check the coolant level when the engine is cold - the cooling system is practically not pressurized and the coolant has reached its normal expansion.

With a cold engine, the level should be at least at the lower mark on the tank. Be careful: when the engine is hot, the coolant will automatically expand. There must be enough space in the reservoir for excess fluid. So don't let the high level fool you.

To add fluid, carefully open the reservoir cap. When the engine is hot, the reservoir is under pressure. Therefore, put a thick rag on the lid. If you open the lid too quickly, there is a danger of scalding - hot coolant, boiling, will splash out of the tank.

Addendum: if the coolant level in the expansion tank has fallen below the mark «MIN», fill the reservoir with the premixed liquid. When opening the reservoir, pay attention to the formation of bubbles and oil dirt - most often this is how a defect in the cylinder head gasket is detected

Do not fill the expansion tank with liquid above the upper mark. When heated, the coolant expands and flows out of the system.

You can safely add small quantities even when the engine is hot.
