Checking the level and topping up the coolant

constant control

SEQUENCE OF WORK

1. Periodically check the coolant level in the expansion tank when the engine is cold, as there is no pressure in the cooling system and the coolant is in good condition.

2. Through the transparent expansion tank, the coolant level is clearly visible with the cap closed. With a cold engine, the level should be just above the lower mark.

When the engine is warm, the coolant expands and the level in the reservoir rises. Therefore, there must be enough space in the tank for the expanding fluid.

3. To top up, carefully open the reservoir cap. Care must be taken when opening the expansion tank cap on a hot engine, as escaping vapors can cause severe burns. To do this, close the cap of the expansion tank with a thick layer of cloth and slowly unscrew it until a hissing sound appears. After the hissing stops, slowly unscrew and remove the plug from the expansion tank. When opening the reservoir, watch for the formation of bubbles and the presence of oil suspension - these are signs of a faulty cylinder head gasket.

Do not fill the coolant above the mark, as when heated, the coolant expands and its excess is removed from the cooling system.

Pic. 6.4. Topping up the coolant expansion tank (pre-mixed in a certain proportion of antifreeze and water)

A small amount of coolant can be topped up when the engine is hot or cold (pic. 6.4).
