If you have difficulty starting the engine with the starter, you should first check the engine compression. If the compression is too low, the engine will not start at low ambient temperatures. Compression measurement is described on p. 28.
Checking the power supply

Connect the test pump between the glow plug of cylinder 4 and the vehicle ground.
Turn the ignition key to position II. The indicator lamp should light at the same time. If the indicator lamp does not light, check the wiring using the electrical connection diagram.
Caution: Do not leave the key in the ignition switch in position II for more than 15 seconds.
Checking glow plugs
Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the contents of electronic memory devices, such as engine fault codes or radio codes, are erased. Before disconnecting, also read the instructions in the chapter "Removal and installation the battery".

Remove the plastic caps from the glow plugs.
Unscrew the electrical wire fastening to the glow plugs.
Connect an ohmmeter to each glow plug in turn and check whether there is an electrical circuit between the glow plug contact and the cylinder block.
If there is no electrical circuit, the glow plug is faulty and should be replaced.
Remove the defective spark plug. Screw the new glow plug into the cylinder head and tighten to a torque of 40 Nm.
Caution: Do not exceed the tightening torque, otherwise the glow plug pin will be damaged, leading to premature failure. Make sure that no oil or fuel comes into contact with the glow plugs. If glow plugs with a burnt pin are found, follow the instructions below.
Screw the electrical wire to the glow plugs with nuts.
Note: If the fault is not detected and the engine starts poorly, the glow plugs should be checked during the warm-up phase. To do this, remove the injectors and observe the glow plugs warming up through the holes.
Install plastic caps on the glow plugs.
Connect the battery ground (-) cable.
If available, set the clock and enter the radio theft protection code.
Glow plugs with burnt pin
Very often, glow plug pin burnout is a consequence of a malfunction of the injector nozzles. This type of damage cannot be attributed to the defects of the spark plugs.

If, when a claim arises, such a glow plug "arrow" is found, it is not enough to simply replace it. It is necessary to check the injectors for injection start pressure and tightness (service station work).
