Shock absorber repair

            0

Repairing the shock absorber of the telescopic strut usually does not lead to the desired result, therefore, if necessary, we recommend replacing the shock absorber.

You will need: key «at 18», hex key «for 6», flat blade screwdriver, spring compressor.

1. Brake the vehicle with the parking brake and set the wheel chocks («shoes») under the rear wheels.

2. With the vehicle on the ground, loosen the upper strut mount nut while holding the shock absorber rod from turning with a hex wrench.

3. Remove the shock absorber from the car (see «Removal and installation of a shock-absorber rack»).

4. Install the spring compressor and compress the spring.

5. Completely unscrew the stem nut.

6. Slide the stem guard…

7.... and remove the upper support of the rack assembly with the compression buffer.

Note. The upper strut support, thrust bearing, and compression buffer are a non-separable assembly, so if one of the three elements fails or is damaged, the assembly must be replaced.

8. Remove the front suspension spring.

Note. Replace springs only in pairs (front and rear).

9. Remove the aluminum gasket and carefully inspect it. The gasket must not show obvious signs of wear or deformation. If there are visible signs of wear, replace the gasket.

10. Detach the protective boot from the top support and remove the compression buffer.

Note. Replace the damaged protective cover with a new one.

11. Install the shock absorber vertically and lower and raise the shock absorber rod several times until it stops. Make sure that the stem moves without dips, jams and knocks. Otherwise, replace the shock absorber. Also, replace the shock absorber if fluid leaks are found (slight sweating in the upper part of the case is allowed) and if the threads in the upper part of the stem are damaged.

Attention! Replace defective shock absorbers only in pairs (front and rear) or set (all four).

Note. Install the spring so that the end of its extreme coil rests against the protrusion of the spring support cup.

12. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

Note. After repairing the shock absorber, check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment. Use the services of workshops with special equipment.
