Cylinder head — disassembly and assembly (Focus 1)

Special tool

	Valve Spring Compressor 303-461 (21-194)
	Adapter for 303-461 303-461-01 (21-194-01)
	Valve stem seal pliers 303-508 (21-211)

Disassembly

NOTE: Save all parts for later assembly.

1. Remove the coolant circulation control unit.



2. Remove the front engine mount bracket.

NOTE: Working in stages, loosen each camshaft bearing cap bolt two turns at a time.

Remove the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.

• 1.Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
• 2.Remove the camshaft.

4. Remove the valve lifters.



5. Remove the hydraulic slack adjusters.



6. Install the camshaft and camshaft bearing caps.

• 1. Install the camshaft.
• 2.Install the camshaft bearing caps.

7. Using a special tool, remove the valve springs.

• Compress the valve spring.
• Remove the valve stem keepers, valve spring retainers and valve springs.

8. Using a special tool, remove the valve stem seals.



9. Remove the valves.

• 1.Remove the exhaust valve.
• 2.Remove the inlet valve.

10. Remove the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.

• 1.Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
• 2.Remove the camshaft.

Assembly

1. Install the camshaft and camshaft bearing caps.

• 1. Install the camshaft.
• 2.Install the camshaft bearing caps.

2. Install the valves.

• 1.Install the release valve.
• 2. Install the inlet valve.

NOTE: The valve stem seals are fully compressed by the pressure of the valve springs.

Using a special tool, install the valve stem seals.



4. Using special tools, install the valve spring.

• Compress the valve spring and valve spring retainer.
• Install the valve crackers.

5. Remove the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.

• 1.Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
• 2.Remove the camshaft.

6. Install hydraulic clearance adjusters.



7. Install the valve lifters.

NOTE: The camshaft sprocket alignment groove must be at the 12 o'clock position.

NOTE: Working in stages, tighten each camshaft bearing cap bolt two turns at a time.

Install the camshaft.



9. Install the front engine mount bracket.

NOTE: Install a new coolant circulation control unit gasket if necessary.

Install the coolant circulation control unit.
