Road test / Roller stand test

            0

A road or roller test may be required for various reasons. This subsection logically presents the road or roller test procedure, starting with pre-checks, then starting and stopping the engine, pre-driving checks, driving test checks, including final checks at the end of the test procedure.

If there is no need for a comprehensive check of the vehicle, there is no need to perform a full-scale road test. Instead, you can use only those sections that are directly relevant to the system under test (systems).

Preliminary checks

WARNING: If the brake fluid level is low or a leak is detected in the hydraulic system, do not road test the vehicle until the cause of the low fluid level is determined or the cause of the leak is corrected.

It is recommended that prior to a road or roller test, preliminary and functional checks are always carried out on those systems/circuits that determine the safe and legal operation of the vehicle, i.e. brake, lighting and steering checks.
  • Engine oil level
  • Engine coolant level
  • Correct tire pressure, tire type and tread pattern compatibility, tire wear
  • Sufficient amount of fuel in the tank to perform the test
  • All areas near the engine, transmission and under the vehicle for oil, coolant, fluid and fuel leaks. Mark leaks and wipe adjacent areas. This will assist in determining the amount of leakage at the completion of the test.

Engine starting

NOTE: When starting off with a cold engine and during the first 1.5 km (1 miles) do not depress the accelerator pedal more than halfway until the vehicle reaches a speed of at least 25 km/h (15 mph). While the engine is cold, never allow high engine speeds or full throttle.

With the ignition off, check the following points:
  • Whether the parking brake is applied.
  • Is the shift lever in neutral position.
  • Are all pointers configured? (except for the fuel gauge) on "zero".

With the ignition on, check the following points:
  • Whether the ignition control lamp is on.
  • Does the engine temperature gauge show a value corresponding to the engine temperature.
  • Does the fuel gauge show a value that corresponds to the level of fuel in the tank.
  • The operation of the parking brake warning lamp and the fluid level warning lamp.

Inspection during a road test or roller test

CAUTION: While the speed is still low, you should check the operation of the brakes, and only then continue with the test. If braking occurs to one side or if there is another manifestation of the problem, do not continue the road test until the problem has been identified and repaired.

  • Clutch pedal action is not tight or difficult.
  • Primary gear engagement is smooth and there are no signs of clutch sticking.
  • The parking brake lever operates smoothly and the brakes are released quickly and completely.
  • The clutch works smoothly, without slipping or jerking.
  • Gear changes are smooth and no unusual noises or vibrations come from the gearbox.
  • Engine power output is normal, full power is achieved, acceleration is smooth, pedal action is not hard or heavy, engine speed decreases to idle correctly.
  • There is no excessive smoke or smoke of an abnormal color during normal driving, heavy duty operation or under engine braking.
  • Steering, including power steering (if available) operates smoothly, precisely, without excessive force or excessive play or vibration. There is no pull to the side, after turning the car smoothly self-centers.
  • Speedometer, oil pressure warning light, coolant temperature gauge and tachometer (in the presence of) give correct readings and act properly.
  • Switches and controls (regulators, levers) operate smoothly and accurately, the indicator lamps and indicators work correctly, the turn signal control lever automatically returns to its original position when the steering wheel is returned to the center position.
  • Heating and ventilation systems operate correctly and efficiently.
  • Action and efficiency of brakes.

Brake check

WARNING: When performing a brake test, avoid breathing fumes from hot brakes, as they may contain hazardous asbestos dust. see chapter "Health and Precautions".

Avoid checking the brakes on busy roads where your actions may cause inconvenience or danger to other road users.

WARNING: Brake Test Including Heavy Duty Test (emergency braking, etc.) should not be carried out if the car has new brake pads / discs or pads / drums that have not yet been run in. New friction elements of the brake system will not be fully effective until the process of their running-in is completed.

Test the brakes at several driving speeds within the normal operating range. Use both light and sharp, strong pressure on the brake pedal. Watch for any tendency to jerk, pull or drag, any excessive delay in applying or releasing the brakes.

Let the car coast (coasting) and also note any slipping tendencies or signs of brake sticking.

After stopping the car (but not immediately after emergency braking) carefully check the temperature of the brakes. A disc that is hot to the touch, or noticeably hotter than others, indicates that the brake is sticking.

Upon completion of the test, check the vehicle:
  • For leaks of oil, engine coolant, hydraulic fluids, air and fuel.
  • For the presence of abnormal temperatures on any moving parts or components, such as: wheel hubs, gearbox, drive axle, etc., which may indicate overtightening or poor lubrication of components and components.
