Car in the repair area
When working on a vehicle in a repair area, the following must always be observed:
- to prevent the vehicle from moving forward or backward, apply the parking brake or block the wheels securely.
- Before performing any work near the front of the car, remove the key from the hood lock, opened by the key.
- When the engine is running, good ventilation or a suction hose must be used to remove exhaust gases.
- if necessary, jacking (rise) vehicle and removing the wheels, make sure there is sufficient space for this.
- when performing any work in the engine compartment, always cover the fenders with protective covers.
- when working on the engine under the vehicle or on a jacked up (upbeat) the vehicle battery must be disconnected.
CAUTION: When performing arc welding on a vehicle, to avoid the possibility of a sudden power surge (which can cause damage to the internal elements of the generator) always disconnect the alternator electrical wires from the vehicle electrical system.
- When carrying out welding work on the vehicle, a suitable fire extinguisher must always be available.
Alternative fuel
WARNING: Always follow the recommended procedures when servicing the fuel system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury.
If there is a smell of liquefied petroleum gas in the air of the repair area of the service station (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG), warn all people in the area to:
- extinguish all fires and put out cigarettes;
- turn off electrical and pneumatic equipment;
- leave the work area;
- ensure ventilation of the working area;
- report this fact to the fire department.
- take the car to a special, ventilated area.
Alternative Fuel - What to do
- Operate the vehicle in a designated, well-ventilated area that is restricted to access by qualified personnel only
- Install new warning signs in their original locations.
- If possible, always insulate the alternative fuel tank; before taking the vehicle into the repair area of a service station, let the vehicle run on alternative fuel until it automatically switches to normal fuel mode
- When repairing or servicing LPG and CNG systems, use only tested and approved elements and piping
Alternative fuel - What not to do
- Do not release LPG fuel into the atmosphere
- Do not use the compressed air line available in the repair area to remove LPG fuel from the fuel tank
- Do not place alternative fuel vehicles in a paint dryer that is hotter than 40°C. Prior to placing such vehicles in ovens for drying paintwork, the temperature of which exceeds 40°C, from them (cars) the fuel tanks for LPG and CNG should be removed.
- Do not modify the system design or install new elements with elements not designed for gas vehicles.
- Do not evacuate fuel tanks unless the repair requires removal of the fuel tank
- Do not work on fuel lines or system components unless alternative fuel has been removed and system pressure has been reduced to or less than atmospheric pressure
- Do not use anything other than a special indicator fluid to find fuel leaks
Be aware of situations that can release LPG or CNG fuel into the atmosphere, such as:
- very hot days
- parking near a large heat generating facility,
- lifting the car near the ceiling heater.
Alternate fuel vehicles must be handled by personnel who are fully trained in Ford and local standards.
