PINPOINT TEST A: PARK BRAKE CANNOT BE APPLIED

A1: CHECKING REAR PARKING BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT

1 Apply the parking brake lever several times to adjust the cable.

• Is the parking brake now applied correctly?

Yes

The car is serviceable

No

Go to A2

A2: CHECKING BRAKE PADS FOR WEAR

1 Inspect the brake pads for excessive wear. See Section 206-00 for more information.

• Are the brake pads and linings in good condition?

Yes

Go to A3

No

INSTALL new brake pads. See Section 206-02 / 206-04 for more information. CHECK the system is working properly.

A3: CHECKING THE PARKING BRAKE CABLES FOR DAMAGE

1 Inspect the parking brake cables and sheaths for signs of wear, rust, and chafing.

• Are the parking brake cables and sheath intact?

Yes

CHECK for other causes of failure, including the tightness of the parking brake lever and the condition of the normal components of the brake system.

No

REPAIR or INSTALL cables and cable sheaths as needed. CHECK the system is working properly.



PINPOINT TEST B: PARK BRAKE CANNOT BE RELEASED

B1: PARK BRAKE LEVER CHECK

1 Raise and secure the vehicle on a lift with the parking brake fully applied. See Section 100-02 for more information.

- Release the parking brake by pulling up on the parking brake lever and pressing the lock button.

• Is the parking brake released?

Yes

CHECK for other causes of failure, including the condition of normal brake system components. REPAIR or INSTALL new items as needed.

No

B2: PARK BRAKE CABLE CHECK

1 Loosen the parking brake cable.

- Turn the rear wheels by hand.

• Do the rear wheels turn freely?

Yes

INSTALL a new parking brake lever. For more information, refer to Parking Brake Lever. available in this section.. CHECK the system is working properly.

No

Go to B3

B3: CHECKING THE FRONT PARKING BRAKE CABLE

1 Disconnect the front parking brake cable and cable sheath from the rear parking brake cable and cable sheath at the equalizer area.

- Manually turn the rear wheels.

• Do the rear wheels turn freely?

Yes

INSTALL a new front parking brake cable and cable sheath. For more information, refer to the Parking Brake Cable and Sheath available in this section.. CHECK the system is working properly.

No

Go to B4

B4: CHECK REAR PARK BRAKE CABLES

1 Release the parking brake from the rear wheel brakes one by one.

- Turn the wheel affected by the released parking brake.

• Does the wheel spin freely?

Yes

INSTALL a new parking brake lever on the rear drum brakes or calipers on the rear disc brakes. See Section 206-02 / 206-04 for more information. CHECK the system is working properly.

No
