Diesel pre-glow system

From experience, a cold diesel engine is usually not easy to start. Although direct-injection engines are less sensitive than pre- or swirl-chamber engines, without pre-glow, even with direct injection, they are reluctant to «tremblingly», transmit the first signs of life to the flywheel. Therefore, powerful glow plugs heat up the compressed air in the cylinder during the cold start phase and thus speed up the ignition process. Direct-injection engines, like the Focus, start in mild winters «politely», but in cold weather they do it with difficulty. Thanks to the pre-glow system, you can happily dispense with the previously obligatory «moments of thought» diesel engines. The pre-glow system will put your Focus in good spirits as soon as the ignition key energizes the system. When the cold engine shows the first signs of life, the glow plugs will continue to heat up for about two more minutes. There are good reasons for this: engine comfort is increased, noise levels are reduced and the exhaust gases are significantly cleaner than without an external heating source.

As a rule, all these helpful assistants do their work discreetly behind the scenes: the pre-glow bulb in the combined instrument panel lights up, if at all, for only a few seconds. The system is subdivided into a control node and a relay node. The control unit is located in the engine compartment and regulates the duration of heating by glow plugs. To ensure that the glow plugs always have full energy, «currents» controls the relay in the box with additional fuses. It occupies slot number 9 and receives voltage through fuse number 5.

Each cylinder is heated by a separate candle. The glow plugs in the Focus are very compact - they work without temperature regulation. This is not a disadvantage, as the fresh air drawn in does not allow the candles to burn out - the maximum temperature is limited to around 1050°C.

Failures in the system are automatically collected by an electronic storage device - the information in it can be read and erased only in the company's workshop.
