The switch serves to amplify the signal that occurs at the moment of the disappearance of the Hall effect, controls the interruption of the primary circuit of the ignition coil, and also corrects the time of the appearance of the Hall effect depending on the engine speed, thus keeping the ignition spark energy almost constant.

The 1.6 dm3 engines use the Lucas ignition system, in which the ignition distributor does not have ignition timing controls. This function is performed by a switch based on signals about the engine speed and vacuum in its intake manifold.
