Safety Instructions: Be sure to read the chapter "Safety precautions when handling an airbag".
Removal
Important: Disconnect the battery ground (-) cable with the ignition off.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the contents of electronic memory devices, such as engine fault codes or radio codes, are erased. Before disconnecting, also read the instructions in the chapter "Removal and installation the battery".
Insulate the negative (-) terminal of the battery to avoid accidental contact.
Safety note: After disconnecting the battery, wait at least 15 minutes for the capacitor to discharge. This prevents the airbag and seat belt tensioner assembly from triggering unintentionally.
Set the vehicle wheels to the straight-ahead position and lock the steering wheel shaft in this position.

Vehicles without airbag: From 2/92: Carefully remove the horn button from the steering wheel cover using a screwdriver. Remove the horn switch from the steering wheel and disconnect the plug connector. Up to 1/92: Remove the cover from the steering wheel.
Cars with an inflatable airbag
Raise the car onto jack stands and remove the lower casing of the engine compartment, see p. 10.

Loosen the bolt securing the pressure plate to the steering column. Turn the pressure plate around.

Remove the 2 airbag mounting bolts from the back of the steering wheel. To access the spline bolts, turn the steering wheel 90° left or right from the straight-ahead position.

Move the airbag slightly away from the steering wheel and disconnect its connector.
Carefully remove the airbag from the vehicle.
Safety instructions: Always carry and store the airbag with the elastic part facing upwards. When carrying, keep the airbag away from your body.
All cars

Disconnect the plug connector "1" of the horn.
Unscrew the fastening "2" of the steering wheel. Before 8/94 the fastening was done with a nut, it must be unscrewed. At the same time, unlock the steering wheel shaft lock with the ignition key so that the lock does not get jammed when released, and after removing the steering wheel, lock the lock again.
Mark the position of the steering wheel on the steering shaft with paint or a scriber.
Knock the steering wheel off the steering shaft with a blow from the palm of your hand.
Installation
Place the steering wheel on the steering shaft in accordance with the marks made before removal.
Connect the horn plug.
Screw in the steering wheel mounting bolt or nut and tighten to 50 Nm. At the same time, unlock the steering wheel shaft lock using the ignition key so that the lock does not get jammed.
Vehicles without airbag: Up to 1/92: Press in the steering wheel cover. From 2/92: Connect the horn plug. Insert the horn switch into the steering wheel and press the horn button into the steering wheel cover.
Cars with an inflatable airbag
Align the pressure plate at the steering column, screw on a new bolt and tighten the mounting bolt to a torque of 25 Nm, see Figure F-4059.
Install the lower engine compartment cover, see p. 10.
Carefully place the airbag on the steering wheel and connect the airbag connector.
Tighten the two airbag mounting bolts on the back of the steering wheel to 6 Nm. To access the spline bolts, turn the steering wheel 90° left or right from the straight-ahead position.
With the ignition off, connect the battery ground (-) wire.
Attention: No one should be inside the vehicle.
