Removal and installation of a steering wheel

Safety note: Be sure to read the chapter "Safety precautions for handling the airbag".


Withdrawal



Important Ground wire (-) Disconnect the battery with the ignition off.

Attention. Disconnecting the battery erases the contents of the electronic memories, such as engine trouble codes or radio codes. Before switching off, also read the instructions in chapter "Removing and installing the battery".


negative pole (-) isolate the battery to avoid accidental contact.

Safety note: After disconnecting the battery, wait at least 15 minutes for the capacitor to discharge. This prevents spontaneous operation of the air bag assembly and the seat belt pretensioner.


Set the vehicle's wheels to the straight-ahead position and lock the steering wheel shaft in this position.



Vehicles without airbag: from 2/92: Using a screwdriver, carefully remove the horn button from the steering wheel cover. Remove the horn switch from the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connector. Up to 1/92: remove the cover from the steering wheel.

Vehicles with an airbag



Raise the car on the goats and remove the lower casing of the engine compartment, see p. 10.




Loosen the clamping plate bolt at the steering column. Unfold the pressure plate.



Remove the 2 airbag mounting bolts from the back of the steering wheel. To gain access to the slotted bolts, turn the steering wheel from the straight-ahead position to the left or right by 90°.



Slide the airbag slightly off the steering wheel and disconnect its connector.


Carefully remove the airbag from the vehicle.

Safety instructions: Carry and stow the airbag with the elastic part always upwards. When carrying the airbag, keep it away from the body.


All cars





Unplug electrical connector -1- for horn.

Unbolt bracket -2- for steering wheel. Until 8/94, the fastening was carried out with a nut, it must be unscrewed. At the same time, unlock the steering wheel shaft lock with the ignition key so that the lock does not pinch when released, and after removing the steering wheel, lock the lock again.

Mark the position of the steering wheel on the steering shaft with paint or scriber.

Knock the steering wheel off the steering shaft with the palm of your hand.

Installation



Attach the steering wheel and put it on the steering shaft in accordance with the marks made before removal.

Connect the horn connector.

Screw in the steering wheel bolt or nut respectively and tighten to 50 Nm. When doing this, unlock the steering wheel lock with the ignition key so that the lock does not get pinched.

Vehicles without airbag: up to 1/92: Press in steering wheel cover. From 2/92: Connect the horn connector. Insert the horn switch into the steering wheel and press the horn button into the steering wheel cover.


Vehicles with an airbag



Align the pressure plate at the steering column, screw in with a new bolt and tighten the mounting bolt to 25 Nm, see Figure F-4059.

Install the lower engine cover see p. 10.

Carefully place the airbag on the steering wheel, connect the airbag connector.

Tighten the two screws securing the airbag on the back of the steering wheel to 6 Nm. To gain access to the slotted bolts, turn the steering wheel from the straight-ahead position to the left or right by 90°.

With the ignition off, connect the ground wire (-) battery.

Attention: No one should be inside the vehicle.


Set clock.

If required, enter the anti-theft code for the radio.
