Steering wheel adjustment

            0

The position of the steering wheel can be adjusted if, when the vehicle is moving in a straight line, it is turned from the middle position by an angle of not more than 30°. If the deviation from the center position is more than 30°, the steering wheel must be rearranged on the steering shaft so that the deviation is less than 30°, after which the position of the steering wheel can be adjusted.

Note: The drawings do not apply to FORD SCORPIO vehicles.

Check the position of the steering wheel Drive a test drive on a straight, level road. When driving in a straight line, the top of the steering wheel spokes must be horizontal. If necessary, mark the deflection of the steering wheel spokes.

Raise the car on the goats.

Mark the installation position of the left and right tie rod ends. To do this, draw a line along both parts with a felt-tip pen.

Loosen the locknuts -1- and the outer collars of the bellows. Turn both tie rods in the same direction; approximately 30°for every degree of steering wheel deflection. When the steering wheel is deflected in a clockwise direction, both steering rods, when viewed from the right side of the vehicle, turn in a clockwise direction. When the steering wheel is deflected in an anti-clockwise direction, both steering rods, when viewed from the right side of the vehicle, turn in an anti-clockwise direction.

Attention. Both tie rods must be turned in the same direction and by the same number of revolutions, otherwise the alignment of the wheels will be disturbed.

Example

The steering wheel deflection in the clockwise direction is 3°.

1°of steering wheel deflection corresponds to 30°of steering rod turn.

Three degrees of deflection of the steering wheel correspond to 3x30°=90°of rotation of the steering rods.

In this case, both tie rods must be rotated by 90° (1/4 turn).

Tighten the tie rod end locknuts to 65 Nm. When tightening the nuts, hold the tie rod ends with a wrench.

Fix corrugated steering rod covers with new clamps.

Lower the car.

Carry out a test drive and check the position of the steering wheel again. If necessary, repeat the adjustment process.

Attention. If the vehicle is found to be pulling left or right during a test drive, the tie rods may have been turned in the wrong direction or turned in different directions. In this case, immediately check the parameters of the running gear at the service station and adjust the toe-in.
