Steering wheel — removal and installation (Taurus 1 and 2)

Warning: If your vehicle is equipped with an air bag, do not attempt to remove the steering wheel. Contact a professional.

Removal


1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Remove the two screws securing the horn cushion to the steering wheel. Grasp the cushion unit by the two upper corners and pull it back away from the steering wheel (see illustration).

3. Pull out the electrical connector and remove the horn cushion. Pull out the wire connector of the mileage control device, if the vehicle is equipped with one.

4. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut (bolt on 1988 models) (see illustration).

5. Remove the steering wheel back from the steering shaft. A steering wheel puller is not required.



Installation


6. Align the indicator mark on the steering wheel hub with the mark on the shaft and place the wheel on the shaft (see figure). Install the mounting bolt or nut, tighten it to the required tightening torque.

7. Insert the electrical connector and install the horn cushion.

8. Connect the wire to the negative terminal of the battery.
