Seat belt tensioner (Scorpio II)

            0

The seat belt tensioner -1- is fitted to the front seats and is firmly connected to the seat belt buckles. In a frontal collision, they provide a snug fit of the seat belt to the body and prevent passengers in the front seats from slipping out from under the belt. The pretensioners are deployed in a severe frontal collision simultaneously with the airbags. Both tensioners are activated simultaneously, even if there is no passenger next to the driver.

Depending on the equipment, mechanical or pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners can be installed.

Pyrotechnic tensioner

1 - seat belt buckle
2 - piston
3 - body with locking mechanism
4 - squib
5 - ignition unit
6 - guide element / attachment point
7 - tensioner cable

At the command of the seat belt pretensioner control unit, a small igniter is ignited in the pretensioner by means of an electric ignition unit. The gases formed during the explosion will move forward the piston in the tensioner cylinder. The piston with a metal cable pulls the seat belt buckle down through the guide element. This tightens the seat belt strap by 60 mm in about five milliseconds. Due to the presence of a locking mechanism in the tensioner housing, the piston stops after tensioning the seat belt.

Mechanical tensioner

When the pretensioner is activated, the pre-compressed spring pulls the seat belt buckle down.

The seat belt tensioner is maintenance free. After operation, it must be replaced by the whole set. After a collision, you must contact the service station to find out if the seat belt tensioner has worked.
