Depending on the equipment, mechanical or pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners may be installed.

Pyrotechnic tensioner

On command from the seat belt tensioner control unit, a small pyropatron is ignited in the tensioner using an electric ignition unit. The gases formed during the explosion move the piston forward in the tensioner cylinder. The piston pulls the seat belt buckle down via a metal cable through a guide element. This tightens the seat belt strap by 60 mm in about five milliseconds. Due to the presence of a locking mechanism in the tensioner housing, the piston is stopped after the seat belt is tensioned.

Mechanical tensioner

When the tensioner is activated, a pre-compressed spring pulls the seat belt buckle downwards.

The seat belt tensioner does not require maintenance. After it has been triggered, it must be replaced as a whole set. After a collision, you must contact a service station to find out whether the seat belt tensioner has been triggered.
