Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery.
Warning! This will erase data in electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory device or the radio code. Please read the section carefully "Removing and installing the battery", before disconnecting it.
Removal in cars with carburetor engines
Remove the air filter, see p. 5.6.
Remove the wire retainer bolt on the intake pipe outlet and remove the wires from the generator.

Remove the upper generator mounting bolt.
Mark the position of the right front wheel relative to the hub with paint. This will allow the balanced wheel to be mounted in the same position. Loosen the wheel nuts with the car on the ground. Place the front of the car on stands and remove the right front wheel.
Remove the inner wing of the car, see p. 17.3.
Remove the belt pulley cover and loosen the V-ribbed belt, remove only from the alternator belt gear, see paragraph 1.19.
Remove the tie rod end, see item 13.3.

Unscrew the lower mounting bolt and remove the generator through the wheel well.
Installation
Install the generator, screw in the lower mounting bolt without tightening.
Lower the car to the ground.
Tighten the upper generator mounting bolt to 50 Nm.
Raise the car.
Tighten the lower mounting bolt to 50 Nm
Install the V-belt and belt pulley cover, see paragraph 1.19.
Install the tie rod end, see item 13.3.
Mount the inner wing of the car, see p. 17.3.
Install the right front wheel so that the markings applied during dismantling match. Pre-lubricate the surface of the rim seat on the wheel hub with bearing grease. Screw the wheel. Lower the car to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts crosswise with a torque of 100 Nm.
Connect the electrical wires to the generator and screw the wire holder to the intake pipe outlet.
Install the air filter, see p. 5.6.
Connect the battery ground (-) wire.
Set the clock to the current time.
Set the radio anti-theft code.
Removing the generator in cars with turbodiesel
Place the vehicle on stands.
Remove the lower engine cover, see p. 2.4.
Remove the alternator V-belt, see paragraph 1.19.
Remove the charge air cooler, see item 1.9.

Disconnect the multi-pin connector from the generator, unscrew the thick wire.

Unscrew and remove the generator.
Installation
Install the generator and tighten with a torque of 50 Nm.
Put a multi-pin connector on the generator and screw on a thick wire.
Place the vehicle on stands.
Fit the V-belt and tighten it, see paragraph 1.19.
Install the lower engine cover.
Lower the car to the ground.
Connect the battery ground (-) wire.
Set the clock to the current time.
Set the radio anti-theft code.
