Removing and installing the oil pan (Mondeo 1)

Removal

Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery.

Warning! This will erase data in electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory device or the radio code. Please read the section carefully "Removing and installing the battery", before disconnecting it.

Raise the vehicle. Drain the engine oil, see item 28.



If present, remove the engine compartment trim.

Petrol engine: Remove the front exhaust pipe, see item 8.

Diesel engine: Unscrew the V-belt protective cover and the lower timing belt protective cover from the bottom of the vehicle, see p. 1.7.

Remove the two bolts securing the oil pan to the transmission flange.



Diesel engine: Disconnect the wire plug from the crankshaft speed sensor "16". If necessary, unscrew the sensor and remove it from the bushing in the oil pan.





Vehicles with oil level indicator: Disconnect the wire from oil level sensor "2". If necessary, unscrew the sensor and remove it together with the seal.

Remove the 10 bolts that secure the oil pan to the cylinder block (there are 14 bolts on a diesel engine) and lift the oil pan downwards. If the pan is securely in place, you can gently pry it off with a screwdriver.

Installation

Clean the inside surface of the oil pan.

Clean the sealing surfaces of the oil pan and cylinder block. If the sealing surface of the pan is deformed, it can be carefully straightened.

4-cylinder petrol engine

Lubricate the sealing surface of the cylinder block at the junction of the front and rear protective covers with a sealing compound, for example, WSK-M4G320A from Ford or Hylosil 502.

Caution: Tighten the oil pan mounting bolts within 20 minutes after applying the sealing compound.

Install the oil pan with a new seal and secure it with bolts.



Push the oil pan all the way towards the gearbox, the pan and the cylinder block should form one plane.

Bolt the oil pan from below to the transmission flange with two bolts.

Tighten all bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern to 20 Nm. Do not overtighten the bolts, otherwise you will crush the seal.

Diesel engine

Lubricate the sealing surface of the cylinder block at the junction of the front and rear protective covers with a sealing compound, such as DPM-4G-9112-F/G from Ford or Loctite 275.

Caution: Tighten the oil pan mounting bolts 20 minutes after applying the sealant.

Install the oil pan with a new seal and secure it with bolts.

Attach the oil pan from below with two bolts.

Lightly tighten all bolts to 10 Nm. First tighten all bolts except the corner bolts counterclockwise and only then tighten the four corner bolts.

If removed, install and tighten the crankshaft speed and oil level sensors. Connect the wire plugs to the sensors; they should snap into place.

Fill with new engine oil, see item 28.

Diesel engine: Screw the timing belt and V-belt protective covers at the bottom.

Petrol engine: Install front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter, see item 8.

Lower the car onto its wheels.

Connect the ground (-) wire to the battery. Set the clock and set the radio anti-theft code.

Take a test drive, check the oil pan for leaks, and if a leak is detected, carefully tighten the bolts.

If equipped, install the lower engine cover.
