The voltage regulator is built into the carbon brush holder. Carbon brushes can be changed individually, but this requires a certain amount of skill. Generator carbon brushes wear out quite slowly, on average after about 120,000 km. It is recommended to prudently replace them a little earlier.
Removal (Bosch Generator)
Remove the generator.
Unscrew screws "1", disconnect spring clamps and remove protective cover "2".
Unscrew screws "4" and move regulator "5" to the side.
Replace the carbon brushes; to do this, you need to unsolder the wire core.
Check the contact rings for wear, if necessary, lightly grind them and polish them clean (work in a repair shop).
Installation

Insert carbon brushes "A" and springs "B" into brush holder "C" and solder the connections.
To prevent solder from rising too high up the multi-pin wire when soldering new brushes, grasp the end with pliers.
Caution! If the end of a multi-contact wire is too tightly gripped by solder, the wire becomes rigid and the carbon brushes become unusable.
Install the voltage regulator and screw it in place. When installing the regulator, make sure that the lug for connecting to the housing "5" is flush with the regulator, see Fig. P15-400001.06.
After installing new carbon brushes, check that they move freely in the brush holders.
Place and screw on the generator cover.
Install the generator, see item 20.23.
Removal (FORD generator)
Attention! Carbon brushes can only be replaced together with the voltage regulator.
Remove the generator.
Unscrew the four screws of the regulator and remove it.
Installation

Insert and screw in regulator "1".
Pull out the locking pin "2".
Note: The replacement regulator is equipped with a locking pin to maintain the carbon brushes in their original position.
Install the generator, see item 20.23.
