Checking the voltage regulator

            0

SEQUENCE OF WORK

1. Connect the multimeter between the contact «+» (red wire) generator and «weight».

2. To warm up the generator, the engine must run for 2 minutes at a crankshaft speed of 3000 to 4000 min-1 (diesel engine –1800–2500 min-1).

3. Turn on the parking light, radio or cabin ventilation fan. This corresponds to a load of 3 to 7 A, the voltage limited by the voltage regulator should be in the range of 13.5-14.8 V.

4. If the voltage is higher than required, the voltage regulator may be defective and must be replaced. At a lower voltage, the alternator carbon brushes are probably worn out. In this case, remove the generator and give it to a car repair shop for repair.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Driving with a faulty alternator

If the generator or voltage regulator fails while driving, you can continue on your way for some time. The battery takes over the emergency supply of electrical energy. Depending on the degree of discharge of the battery and its capacity, there will be enough energy for about 5 hours of driving, provided that you turn off all additional consumers of electricity.

• Disconnect the universal connector from the alternator to prevent the battery from being discharged by a faulty alternator or voltage regulator.

• Do not stop without a reason, as the starter consumes a lot of electricity when starting the engine. If possible, use coasting.

• Do not operate the heated rear window, fan or radio.

• Operate the washer and windshield wiper only when necessary.

• In the dark, drive as far as possible without turning on the high beams and fog lights.
