Checking the voltage regulator (Mondeo 3)

1. Connect a multimeter between the "+" terminals (red wire) of the generator and ground.
2. Let the engine run for two minutes at high speed of 3000 to 4000 rpm (diesel engine – 1800–2500 rpm) to allow the generator to warm up to operating temperature (about 80°C).
3. Turn on the parking lights, radio or fresh air fan. This corresponds to a current load of 3 to 7 amperes. The regulating voltage should be between 13.5 and 14.8 volts.
4. If you measure a strong voltage, then the regulator is defective and needs to be replaced. If the voltage is low, then, according to practice, the sliding electrographite contacts of the generator are worn out. In this case, it is necessary to dismantle the generator and repair it in a workshop.

This will help you work more efficiently

• Disconnect the multi-pin connector from the alternator. The battery will no longer be drained by a faulty alternator or voltage regulator.
• Do not interrupt movement unless necessary - the starter will require a particularly large amount of current each time it starts.
• If possible, it would be better to roll the car up.
• Turn off the rear window defroster, air conditioning and radio.
• Only operate the windscreen wiper and washer system for short periods of time.
• In the dark, drive with your low beams on if possible.
