Checking the voltage regulator

            0

PROCEDURE
  1. Connect multimeter between terminals «+» (red wire) generator and mass.
  2. Let the engine run for two minutes at high speed from 3000 to 4000 rpm (diesel engine - 1800–2500 rpm), to bring the generator up to operating temperature (about 80°С).
  3. Turn on the parking lights, radio or fresh air fan. This corresponds to a current load of 3 to 7 amperes. The control voltage must be between 13.5 and 14.8 volts.
  4. If you measure a strong voltage, then the regulator is defective and needs to be replaced. If the voltage is low, then, according to practice, the sliding electrographite contacts of the generator are worn out. In this case, it is necessary to dismantle the generator and repair it in a workshop.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

This will help you work more efficiently

If you are driving with a defective alternator.

If the generator or regulator «went on strike», then you need to move on, taking into account certain restrictions, because the battery takes over the power supply. Depending on the degree of charge and capacity, its energy is sufficient for about five hours, of course, if all redundant consumers are turned off.
  • Disconnect the multi-pin connector from the generator. The battery will no longer be drained by a defective alternator or voltage regulator.
  • Do not interrupt the movement unnecessarily - the starter will need an especially large amount of current at each start.
  • Roll your car up if possible.
  • Turn off the heated rear window, air conditioner and radio.
  • Operate the windshield wiper together with the windshield washer system only for a short time.
  • In the dark, move, if possible, only with the dipped beam on.
