Starter replacement (Mondeo 3)

If your Mondeo's starter is going on strike, there are usually several components involved. The solenoid switch or sliding electro-graphite contacts, for example, may be jammed or worn. Or the armature shaft may be jammed in its "storage area." Before heading to your home machine shop to make repairs, consider a replacement starter or a used unit from a recent accident. Ford still offers a replacement starter kit as a spare.

ORDER OF EXECUTION

Duratec-HE, DuraTorg-DI

Disconnect the battery ground cable and...
...lift and securely support the front of the vehicle.

DuraTorg-DI
Remove the lower engine trim.

All models
Remove the mudguard.

Release the blower air intake pipe from the suction tube to...
...to then remove the suction hose from the intake and EGR lines.
Then remove the TMAP sensor and...

...remove the intake manifold.

All models
Release the cable harness bracket and set it aside.
Now remove both connecting wires from the electromagnetic switch.

Duratec-VE
Remove the rear starter mount (indicated by arrows)...

B...unscrew the front screws (indicated by arrows), remove the starter from the clutch housing and dispose of the old gasket.

Unscrew the front screws (indicated by arrows) of the starter and pull it out of the clutch housing.

Duratec-HE
First install the rear starter mount and tighten the nut securely.
Before installation, check that the cover (indicated by the arrow) is correctly positioned in the gearbox housing.

Check the placement of the cover (indicated by the arrow) in the gearbox housing.

All models
Fit the new starter with a new gasket and tighten the front flange screws to 25 Nm.
Complete the installation in reverse order, depending on the vehicle type.
