Check, removal and installation of the traction relay

If the traction relay malfunctions, the gear in the starter is not attracted to the gear rim of the flywheel. Because of this, the starter cannot turn the engine shaft. This defect is more common than the starter motor itself fails.

Installed check

Disengage gear, place shift lever in neutral position.

Briefly bridge terminal 30 with the auxiliary wire on the starter (thick positive wire) and terminal 50 (thin wire going to the ignition and instrument switch), the starter drive gear should move forward quickly and engage the starter. If this does not happen, unscrew the starter and replace the relay.

Withdrawal

Remove the starter and retest it in the removed position using the battery. As a supply line to terminal 50 of the starter, a wire is suitable for connecting the starter to the auxiliary (outside the car) battery. If the gear moves forward quickly without starting the starter, have the starter repaired by a workshop.

If the gear does not move quickly forward, unscrew and replace the traction relay.

Installation

Seal the separation joint -F- with suitable sealing material.

Hang the traction relay on the forked lever in the starter, then screw the traction relay.

Screw the wire going to the traction relay.

Check the starter again as described above.

Install starter.
