General information about the generator

Ford Mondeo is equipped with a Bosch, Mitsubishi or Ford three-phase current generator. Depending on the model and equipment, generators of various capacities are installed.

The generator is driven by the crankshaft through a V-belt. In this case, the rotor, using the field winding, rotates inside the fixed winding of the starter at a speed twice the speed of the engine.

Through graphite brushes and slip rings, the excitation current flows into the excitation winding. This creates a magnetic field. The position of the magnetic field in relation to the stator winding is constantly changing in accordance with the rotation of the rotor. As a result, an alternating current flows in the stator winding.

Since the battery is being charged by the alternator, the three-phase current is converted via rectifiers mounted on the diode board into direct current. The voltage regulator changes the charge current by switching the excitation current on and off according to the state of charge of the battery. At the same time, the regulator keeps the operating voltage constant at about 14 V, regardless of the speed.
