Replacing the oil pan seal on a 2.2L duratorq-tdci engine

Fig. 5.57. Location of oil pan mounting bolts for the 2.2L Duratorq-TDCi engine.

The engine oil pan flange is sealed with FORD WSE-M4G323-A4 sealant-gasket, any gasket is missing. If oil leakage occurs, the seal must be replaced.

Perform work on an inspection pit, overpass or lift.

1. Drain the oil from the engine (see Changing engine oil and oil filter).

2. Unscrew the twenty-one bolts (Fig. 5.57) securing the oil pan to the engine cylinder block, carefully pry it up with a screwdriver and remove the oil pan.

3. Clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and cylinder block from old sealant.

4. Apply a special sealant-gasket (FORD WSE-M4G323-A4 or its equivalent) to the mating surface of the oil pan with a 3 mm diameter roller, and the line of application of the sealant-gasket should be on the inside of the mounting holes.

5. No later than 10 minutes after applying the sealant, install the oil pan on the cylinder block and screw in the pan mounting bolts without tightening.

CAUTION: To ensure a tight seal, the following operation must be completed within 5 minutes of installing the crankcase.

6. Tighten the crankcase mounting bolts.

7. Fill the engine with oil (see Changing engine oil and oil filter).

NOTE: You can fill the oil and start the engine no earlier than one hour after installing the oil pan: this time is necessary for the sealant to polymerize.
