Cleaning the crankcase ventilation system (Mondeo 4)

Over time, resinous deposits from crankcase gases accumulate in the engine crankcase ventilation system, making it difficult for these gases to be removed into the engine cylinders for combustion. For this reason, the gas pressure inside the engine increases and oil leaks through the seals appear. To prevent this from happening, periodically clean and flush the system.

You will need: flat-head and Phillips-head screwdrivers, tools for removing the cylinder head cover.

TIP: Clean the crankcase ventilation system before every oil change.

For cleaning the crankcase ventilation system of the Duratec Ti-VCT 1.6L engine perform the following operations.

1. Remove the decorative engine cover (see Removing and installing the decorative engine cover).



2. Remove the air filter cover…



3….and remove the filter element (see Replacing the Air Filter Element).





4. Remove the crankcase ventilation filter from the air filter housing slot.

NOTE: If the filter is heavily soiled, replace it with a new one.

5. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the holder on the intake pipe.



6. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the connecting hose…





7….and remove the hose.



8. Lift the air filter housing by pulling it upwards, overcoming the force of the rubber bushings…



9….and disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from it by squeezing the clamp of its fastening.



10. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube.



11. Remove the cylinder head cover (see Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket).

HELPFUL TIP: Replace the cylinder head cover gasket with a new one every time you remove it.

12. Wash the oil deflectors, the inner surface of the cylinder head cover and its pipe with gasoline or kerosene.

13. Install the cylinder head cover and crankcase ventilation hoses in the reverse order of removal.

For cleaning the crankcase ventilation system of Duratec-НЕ engines with a volume of 2.0 and 2.3 l perform the following operations.

1. Remove the decorative engine cover (see Removing and installing the decorative engine cover).

2. Loosen the clamps of the air supply hoses to the air filter and disconnect them from the pipes on the air filter cover (see Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket).



3. Remove the screws securing the air filter cover.



4. Remove the air filter cover…





5….and remove the filter element (see Replacing the Air Filter Element).



6. Remove the crankcase ventilation filter from the air filter housing slot.

NOTE: If the filter is heavily soiled, replace it with a new one.

7. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the holder.





8. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the cylinder head cover by squeezing the fastening clips.



9. Lift the air filter housing by pulling it upwards, overcoming the resistance of the rubber bushings…



10….and disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from it by squeezing the clamps of its fastening.



11. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube.

12. Remove the cylinder head cover (see Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket).

HELPFUL TIP: Replace the cylinder head cover gasket with a new one every time you remove it.

13. Wash the oil deflectors, the inner surface of the cylinder head cover and its pipe with gasoline or kerosene.

14. Install the cylinder head cover and crankcase ventilation hoses in the reverse order of removal.
