To replace the cylinder head cover gasket on a 1.6L Duratec Ti-VCT engine, follow these steps:.
You will need a 12 mm wrench.
1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover.
3. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the two camshaft position sensors (see Checking and replacing engine management system sensors).
4. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the two valve timing control valves…
5….unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the phase adjustment valves.
6. Remove the high-voltage wire tips from the spark plugs.
7. Unscrew the twelve bolts securing the cylinder head cover, remove the cover and the gasket installed underneath it.
8. Clean the cover grooves and the mating surface of the cylinder head from the remains of the old gasket.
9. Install the cylinder head cover with a new gasket and all removed parts in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the cover mounting bolts in the order shown in Fig. 5.23, in two stages: 1st - preliminary tightening with a torque of 3 N·m (0.3 kgf·m); 2nd – final tightening to 9 Nm (0.9 kgf·m).

To replace the cylinder head cover gasket on 2.0L and 2.3L Duratec-HE engines, follow these steps:.
You will need a 12 mm wrench.
1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover.
3. Remove the ignition coils (see Removing and installing ignition coils for duratec-he and duratec-v15 engines).
4. Unscrew the decorative casing mounting ball joints from the studs…
5….and remove the racks.
6. Remove eleven studs and three bolts securing the cylinder head cover…
7….and remove the lid.
NOTE: When replacing the cylinder head cover gasket on the 2.3L Duratec-HE engine, it is also necessary to remove the camshaft position sensor from the cylinder head cover by disconnecting the wiring harness connector and unscrewing the bolt securing it to the cylinder head cover.
8. Remove the old gasket from the cylinder head cover grooves…
9….and four spark plug well seal gaskets.
NOTE: When replacing the cylinder head cover gasket on the 2.3L Duratec-HE engine, the camshaft timing solenoid valve seal installed in the cylinder head cover must also be replaced.
10. Install the cylinder head cover with a new gasket and all removed parts in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the cover mounting bolts in the order shown in Fig. 5.24, in two stages: 1st - preliminary tightening with a torque of 3 N·m (0.3 kgf·m); 2nd – final tightening to 9 Nm (0.9 kgf·m).
