NOTE: Carry out work on an inspection pit, overpass or, if possible, on a lift.
1. Disconnect the wires from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Place a secure support under the engine.
3. Remove the right front wheel.
4. Remove the right front wheel arch liner (see Removing and installing wheel mudguards and fender liners).
5. Remove the right powertrain mount (see Replacing the right powertrain suspension support).
6. Remove the front timing cover.
7. Remove the starter (see Removing and installing the starter).

8. Secure the crankshaft from turning by installing a special lock (Fig. 5.51) in the hole on the cylinder block, aligning the holes on the cylinder block and flywheel.

9. Secure the exhaust camshaft pulley from turning by installing a special lock (Fig. 5.52) in the hole on the pulley, aligning the holes on the pulley and the cylinder head.
10. Loosen the timing belt tension by loosening the tensioner's central bolt by inserting a hex key into the adjustment hole and turning the tensioner roller counterclockwise.
11. Remove the belt.
CAUTION: When removing the timing belt, do not rotate the engine crankshaft or camshaft.
12. Put on the new belt.
13. Set the tension roller position depending on the engine temperature (see Fig. 5.42) and tighten the central bolt of the timing belt tensioner. The tension roller spring will set the required tension.
14. Remove the clamps used to fix the position of the crankshaft (see Fig. 5.51) and the exhaust camshaft pulley (see Fig. 5.52).
15. Turn the crankshaft four turns clockwise.
16. Check the correct installation of the timing belt. To check, insert a special tool into the hole on the camshaft pulley (see Fig. 5.52 and item 8), aligning the holes on the pulley and cylinder head. The special tool can only be installed if the valve timing is set correctly.
17. If the timing belt is installed correctly, install all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
