Withdrawal


1. Remove the timing belt. For more information, refer to the Timing Belt chapter found in this section.

CAUTION: Lock using the special tool.


Remove pulleys from camshafts.



3.
NOTE: Release sequence.


NOTE: Keep the bearing caps in order for later installation. Identification numbers are located on the outer surface of the camshaft bearing caps.


Remove camshafts.
  • Loosen each camshaft bearing cap bolt one turn just enough to release the camshaft.
  • Disconnect the camshaft bearing caps.
  • Remove the camshaft oil seal.



4.
NOTE: Keep the valve lifters in order for later installation.



Using special tool 303-196, remove the valve lifters and valve shims.

Installation


1.
NOTE: Install the valve lifters and shims in the correct sequence.


Install the valve lifters.

2.
NOTE: Identification numbers are located on the outer surface of the camshaft bearing caps.


Apply sealant to the indicated locations on the #1 camshaft bearing cap and cylinder head mating surface.



3.
CAUTION: Reinstall the camshaft so that none of the cams is in the full lift position.


NOTE: The numbering of the camshaft bearing caps starts on the timing belt side with E1 on the exhaust side and I1 on the intake side.


NOTE: The exhaust camshaft has an additional cam for the camshaft position sensor (SMR).


Install the camshaft bearing caps and camshafts. Before installing, lubricate the camshafts and camshaft bearings using engine oil.



4.
NOTE: Tightening sequence.



Install the camshaft bearing caps and tighten the bolts, working in three stages.
  • Step 1: Half a turn on each bolt until the bearing cap is in contact with the cylinder head.
  • Stage 2: 7 Nm
  • Stage 3: 45 degrees



5. Adjust valve clearances. For more information, refer to the Valve Clearances chapter in this section.

6. Using the special tool, install a new camshaft oil seal. Coat the camshaft and oil seal lip with engine oil.



7. Install the camshaft pulleys so that they can rotate.

8. Install the timing belt. For more information, refer to the Timing Belt chapter found in this section.
