1Fuel Evaporative Control System Purge Valve
2Carbon filter for fuel vapor control system

The fuel vapor control system consists of a carbon canister and a carbon canister cleaning valve. The carbon canister is connected to the fuel tank and the cleaning valve to the intake manifold using a combination of plastic pipes and rubber hoses. The system is designed to reduce the level of hydrocarbon emissions from the fuel tank.

When the purge valve is closed (normal position), the fuel tank is vented through the carbon filter, which absorbs fuel vapors and prevents hydrocarbons from being released into the atmosphere. When the purge valve is open, the carbon filter is exposed to the vacuum from the intake manifold and the products of fuel vapor absorption are drawn into the manifold, where they mix with the incoming air-fuel flow.

The fuel vapor monitoring system is controlled by the powertrain control module in accordance with calibrated data tables.
