1Evaporative control system purge valve
2Evaporative carbon filter

The fuel vapor control system consists of a carbon filter and a carbon filter cleaning valve. Using a combination of plastic pipes and rubber hoses, the carbon filter is connected to the fuel tank, and the purge valve to the intake manifold. The system is designed to reduce the level of hydrocarbon emissions from the fuel tank.

With the purge valve closed (normal position) the fuel tank is vented through a carbon filter, which absorbs fuel vapors and prevents the release of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. When the purge valve is open, the charcoal filter is exposed to vacuum from the intake manifold and the fuel vapor suction products are drawn into the manifold, where they mix with the incoming air-fuel stream.

The fuel vapor control system is controlled by the powertrain control module in accordance with calibrated data tables.
